A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck central Nepal on 25 April 2015, followed by a magnitude 7.3 major aftershock on 12 May.

Overview
The earthquake originated near Gorkha at 11:56 Nepal time on 25 April 2015. USGS measured the mainshock at magnitude 7.8 and located it at 28.231°N, 84.731°E, at a depth of 8.2 km. Severe shaking, landslides and avalanches affected central Nepal, including the Kathmandu Valley and mountain districts. The Government of Nepal's final disaster summary records 8,896 deaths, 198 people missing, 22,302 injured, 604,930 houses fully damaged and 288,856 partially damaged. It records total material losses of NPR 706 billion. The Government-led Post-Disaster Needs Assessment became the basis for national recovery and resilient reconstruction.
